Independence and The Formation of Haiti (1804)

Declaration of Independence:

Haitian Independence: 

On January 1, 1804, Haiti became the first Black

republic and abolished slavery entirely.

Dessalines’ Proclamation:

Declared the island’s freedom colonial powers and reasserted identity and pride.

Isolation:

Haiti faced economic isolation as European countries refused trade with or recognize the Black republic.

Monarchy vs. Republic: Haiti's early leaders struggled between creating a monarchy or a republic, with internal conflicts affecting stability.

French Indemnity: In 1825, France demanded financial compensation for its lost colony, crippling Haiti's economy for generations.

Constitution of 1805: Drafted by Dessalines, it established principles of racial equality and prohibited slavery forever.
